Natural DHT Blockers: Which Ones Have Actual Evidence Behind Them?

Search "natural DHT blocker" and you'll get lists of twenty ingredients, most backed by nothing more substantial than a test tube and some wishful thinking. Somebody put nettle root in a petri dish, something happened, and now it's in every hair gummy on the market.

You deserve better than that. Here's an honest ranking based on what the human research actually shows, including where it's thin.

Tier 1: meaningful human evidence

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens). The most-studied natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, and the closest natural analogue to how finasteride works.

Research shows it can help reduce DHT levels by up to 30%. A 2020 review of saw palmetto research in hair loss, covering several hundred participants across multiple studies, reported improvements in hair density or quality in the majority of studies reviewed, with a favourable tolerability profile. A two-year comparative study found improvement in around 38% of men on saw palmetto versus around 68% on finasteride: honestly read, finasteride is clearly stronger, and 38% from a plant extract is not nothing.

Studied doses: roughly 200 to 320mg daily.

Pumpkin seed oil. Backed by one of the better natural-ingredient trials in this entire category.

A 24-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Cho et al., 2014) found men taking 400mg daily saw a 40% increase in mean hair count, versus 10% for placebo. Real design, blinded assessors, phototrichographic measurement. Also studied for 5-alpha reductase activity via its phytosterol content.

Studied dose: 400mg daily. This matters enormously, and I'll come back to it.

Tier 2: promising, thinner evidence

Rosemary oil (topical). A 2015 study found it comparable to 2% minoxidil over six months in men with androgenetic alopecia, with less scalp itching. Genuinely interesting. It's also one study, on the lower minoxidil strength, and daily application of oil to your scalp is messy in a way that predicts how long you'll actually keep doing it. Worth watching, not worth betting your regimen on.

Green tea (EGCG). Inhibits 5-alpha reductase in laboratory studies. Human hair outcome data is minimal. Drink it because you like it, not because it's a strategy.

Zinc. Genuine 5-alpha reductase modulation exists in the literature, and zinc deficiency genuinely causes hair loss. But if you're not deficient, topping up doesn't add benefit, and high-dose zinc long-term interferes with copper absorption. Fix a deficiency if you have one. Don't treat it as a DHT strategy.

Tier 3: mostly hype

Nettle root, reishi, fenugreek, pygeum, and essentially every "DHT blocker" shampoo ingredient: lab signals at best, minimal or no human hair outcome data. Some may do something. None has evidence that would justify building a regimen around it.

Special mention for biotin, which deserves its own paragraph because it's in everything.

Biotin is not a DHT blocker. It has no mechanism against androgenetic alopecia whatsoever. Biotin deficiency causes hair loss, but genuine deficiency is rare in anyone eating normally. Supplementing biotin when you're not deficient produces expensive urine and excellent marketing photography. It can also skew certain blood test results, including thyroid and cardiac markers, which is a genuinely underappreciated problem. If a "hair growth" product leads with biotin, it's telling you it has nothing better.

The dosing problem nobody mentions

Here's what actually separates products that work from products that sell.

A supplement with 25 ingredients on the label sounds thorough. In practice, fitting 25 ingredients into a capsule means each one is present in a token amount: enough to print, nowhere near what any study used. That's a proprietary blend doing marketing work, not biological work.

Compare: the pumpkin seed oil study used 400mg daily. If a product contains 50mg of pumpkin seed oil alongside 24 other things, it isn't a pumpkin seed oil product. It's a product with pumpkin seed oil written on it, and you can't extrapolate a 40% hair count result to an eighth of the dose.

Check the actual milligrams against the studied doses. That single habit disqualifies most of the category.

How to build a natural stack that makes sense

The logic is unglamorous: take the ingredients with real human evidence, at the doses the studies used, for long enough that hair cycles can respond. Months, not weeks.

The honest caveat

Natural DHT reduction is gentler than finasteride. That's simultaneously the appeal (tolerability) and the limitation (potency). I'm not going to pretend a plant extract matches a pharmaceutical, because the comparative data says it doesn't.

For early to moderate thinning, or for men who've weighed up finasteride and decided against it, it's a rational, evidence-based first move. For aggressive, fast-moving loss, have a proper conversation with a GP about the full range of options, including the ones we don't sell.

Either way, the evidence-based shortlist is genuinely short. Two ingredients, proper doses, taken consistently, starting now rather than after another six months of research.
